Women’s Basketball Falls to Luther, 83-51 Posted on November 25th, 2005 by

The Gustavus women’s basketball team fell to 1-1 on the season following a 83-51 loss to Luther College Friday at the UW-Eau Claire Thanksgiving Showcase. Luther broke a 20-20 tie with a 19-2 run to take a 39-22 lead with 2:18 to play in 1st half. The Gusties got no closer than 11 in the second half. Junior post Bri Monahan (Hutchinson, Minn.) led the Gusties with 16 points.

The Norse, who improved to 3-0 with the win, were led by Anne Straate’s 21 points on 10-of-13 shooting. As a team, Luther connected on 60.7 percent (30-of-56) of their shots from the field, while the Gusties were held to 34.5 percent on 20-of-58 shooting. Gustavus shot only 25 percent (8-of-32) in the second half after hitting on 46.2 percent (12-of-26) of their shots in the first half.

Monahan led the Gusties in scoring, with sophomore guard Jess Vadnais (Hudson, Wis.)adding 12 points on 5-of-11 shooting, as well as a team-high three steals. Senior guard Sara Boldt (Faribault, Minn.) added eight points, while sophomore forward Vicky Peterson (Plymouth, Minn.) pulled down five rebounds off the bench before fouling out. Sophomore Kenzie Consoer (Mankato, Minn.) added team-highs with three blocks and three steals.

Luther also had a 42-30 advantage on the boards.
