The Gustavus men’s soccer team defeated Augsustana College (Ill.) 4-0 in Colorado Springs, Colorado on Sunday afternoon. The Gusties were led by forward Alex Groth who scored two goals. Forward Caleb Bousu added two assists. Gustavus will face Colorado College on Monday afternoon.
Alex Groth would provide all the scoring the Gusties would need in the first 20 minutes of the match. He scored the first goal at the 16:51 mark with an assist from Caleb Bousu. Just two minutes later, Groth struck again giving the Gusties a 2-0 lead at the 18:47 mark. Bousu was once again credited with the assist. The first half ended with Gustavus holding a 2-0 advantage.
In the second half, Jeffrey Johnson extended the lead to 3-0 when he took a feed from Chris Pinahs and beat the Augustana goaltender at the 48:16 mark.
Gustavus closed out the scoring with a goal by Matt Broin at 78:15. Tore Johnson was credited with the assist. The Gusties outshot Augustana 17-4 in the match including 10-2 in the second half. Tyler Garry made three saves and recorded his sixth shutout of the season. The match was played on a gray and chilly day with temperatures in the lower 30s.
The match was the first ever played between Gustavus and Augustana College in men’s soccer.
