Men’s Soccer Claims 3-1 Win Over Colorado College Posted on October 24th, 2005 by

The Gustavus men’s soccer team extended its unbeaten string to six games with a 3-1 win over Colorado College in Colorado Springs on Monday afternoon. The Gusties were led by senior forward Jeff Aasness who scored two goals including the game-winner. Bobby Kroog scored the team’s first goal and Ben Heupel was credited with two assists.

Colorado College got up on the Gusties early as Pat Fagan scored an unassisted goal just three minutes into the match. The Tigers would hold the lead throughout the first 45 minutes and led 1-0 at the intermission. Gustavus trailed at the half for only the second time this season.

Colorado College maintained its slim lead well into the second half, however Gustavus exploded for three goals in a ten minute span including two goals by Jeff Aasness within a minute of each other. Bobby Kroog tied the score at 1-1 with an unassisted goal at the 60:27 mark. Then nine minutes later Jeff Aasness scored what turned out to be the game-winner at 69:15. Ben Heupel picked up the assist on the goal. Just :43 seconds later, Aasness would ice the victory with another goal. Heupel was credited with the assist again.

Gustavus managed to control play in the second half, out-shooting Colorado College 9-0. The Gusties held a 16-6 advantage in shots for the entire match.

Sophomore Trevor Brown made one save and allowed one goal in picking up the win in the nets for Gustavus.

The Gusties, who are now 12-2-3 overall and 6-1-2 in the MIAC, will close out their regular season with a match at Bethel on Saturday. Gustavus, which is currently in second place in the MIAC one point behind Macalester, has clinched a playoff spot. The MIAC Playoffs will begin on Wednesday, November 2 with two semifinal matches. The championship match will be played on Saturday, November 5 at the site of the highest remaining seed.
