The top-seeded Gustavus Adolphus College men’s tennis team advanced to the Central-Sub Region championship match with an impressive 7-0 win over Coe at the Brown Outdoor Courts in St. Peter on Friday. The Gusties will face Carthage on Saturday at noon. Carthage beat the University of Chicago 5-0 in its first round match Friday. The winner of Saturday’s match will advance to the NCAA Team Championship quarterfinals, which will take place May 18-20 in Santa Cruz, California.
Gustavus jumped out to an early 1-0 lead by winning the doubles point. Adam Morgan and Brett Morse-Karzen beat Chad Evans and Chris Paasch 8-3 at the #1 position, while Ben Lundell and Jesse Brauer defeated Jeff White and Ryan Krabbe at the #2 position 8-1. Andy Bryan and Roy Bryan won 8-3 at the #3 position over Jake Michael and Ryan Yao.
In singles action, Gustavus recorded wins by all six players, including a quick 6-0, 6-0 win by Adam Morgan at the #2 position that gave the Gusties a 2-0 advantage. By sweeping the singles matches, Gustavus went on to win 7-0.
Gustavus improves to 27-4 overall. With a win over Carthage (20-5), the Gusties would reach the quarterfinals of the NCAA Team Championship for the 12th consecutive time.
