The Gustavus softball team opened up conference play with a doubleheader against the College of Saint Benedict on Saturday, April 2 in St. Joseph, Minn. The Gusties swept the Blazers to improve to 2-0 in the MIAC and 6-10 overall, while the Blazers fell to 0-2 in the MIAC and 8-5 overall.

In game one, the Blazers jumped out to 5-0 lead in the first inning of play. The home team added another run in the second inning to push their lead to six. Gustavus scored four runs in the top of the fourth inning to pull within two runs. The Gusties added another four runs in the top of the seventh to secure the 8-6 conference victory.

In game two, the Gusties held a 2-1 lead heading into the fifth inning. Coach Shanda Ness’ squad added a run in the fifth and seventh inning to claim the 4-1 victory and complete the conference sweep.

Joyce Dewitz pitched both games for Gustavus and tallied her first two conference wins of the season.

Gustavus will host Bethany Lutheran College on Monday, April 4 in a doubleheader. The first game is scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m.
