Men’s Hockey Will Face Saint Olaf in the First Round of the MIAC Tournament Posted on March 1st, 2005 by

The Gustavus Adolphus College men’s hockey team will play Saint Olaf in the quarterfinals of the MIAC Tournament Tuesday night in Northfield. The Gusties earned the fifth and final conference playoff spot by beating Augsburg 6-2 in their final regular season home game. Gustavus enters the league playoffs with an overall record of 10-14-1 and an MIAC mark of 7-8-1. Coach Petersen’s squad is led in scoring by Keith Detlefsen with 37 points (13g, 24a), while Mike Hosfield (9g, 12a), Adam Meyer (7g, 14a), and Loren Havemeier (11g, 9a) each have 20 or more total points. Goaltender Erik Kraska leads the Gusties with an overall record of 8-2-1 and a 90.1 save percentage.

Saint Olaf comes into the quarterfinal game with an overall record of 13-6-6 and a league mark of 8-4-4. The Oles swept Saint Mary’s to end their conference season and enter the playoffs winning seven of their last eight games. Keith Townsend leads Saint Olaf with 26 points (7g, 19a), while Ted Bickel (16g, 9a) and Mike MacMillan (7g, 17a) are the next two leading scorers for the Oles. Goaltender Dan Kehler leads the team with a record of 10-3-5 and a 90.7 save percentage.

Gustavus leads the all-time series against Saint Olaf with a 49-19-2 record. The Oles swept the Gusties this season in MIAC play winning 7-1 in Northfield and 7-2 in St. Peter.

The winner of Tuesday’s game will advance to play at Saint John’s in the conference semifinal game on Thursday, March 3.
