The Gustavus women’s basketball team posted its third straight conference win with a 76-55 victory over Augsburg College. Four Gusties scored in double figures, including senior post Kristin Kachelmyer who led the team with 19 points and 14 rebounds. Sophomore post Bri Monahan also recorded a double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds. First year guard Jess Vadnais posted 17 points and three steals, while senior wing Lacy Skoog posted 13 points and seven assists. Augsburg was led by senior forward Katie Kelsey with 18 points. With the win, the Gusties improved to 9-3 overall and 7-2 in the MIAC, while Augsburg falls to 0-12 and 0-9 in the conference.
The Gusties held a 12 point lead at halftime and built their lead to as many as 27 at two points in the second half. Gustavus forced 24 Augsburg turnovers and held the Auggies to only 32% shooting while shooting nearly 43% in the game. The Gusties struggled, however, from behind the three-point line and at the free throw line, shooting 29.2% and 45.0% respectively.
Kristin Kachelmyer’s 14 rebounds brought her career total to 513, making her only the seventh player in Gustavus history to post 500 boards in her career. She also posted her fifth double-double of the season, the highest mark in the MIAC soo far this season.
The Gusties will not play on Monday due to the cancellation of Macalester’s season, but will be back in action on Wednesday in a matchup with Saint Ben’s. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in St. Peter.
