The Gustavus men’s soccer team upset defending national champion Trinity University 1-0 in San Antonio, Texas on Friday night. Taylor Stein scored the gamewinner in the 58th minute with an assist from Chris Pinahs. The Gusties (18-1-3) will now play the University of California at Santa Cruz (18-1-0) on Saturday, Nov. 20 at 7 pm in the sectional finals. The winner will advance to the NCAA Final Four which will be held in Greensboro, North Carolina on Nov. 26-27.

Andy Moulton recorded four saves and picked up his school record 12th shutout of the season. Moulton’s has now compiled 24 career shutouts which ranks second all-time behind Mark Genosky with 26.

The Gusties also set two team records in the match including wins in a season with 18 (the previous record was 17 set in 2000) and shutouts in a season with 18 (the previous record was 17 set last year).

Gustavus snapped Trinity’s NCAA record 43-match win streak which dated back to November of 2002. The Gusties also held Trinity scoreless for the first time since a 1-0 loss to Rhodes during the 2001 season.
