Women’s Soccer Defeats St. Thomas 1-0 Posted on October 28th, 2004 by

The Gustavus women’s soccer team knocked St. Thomas out of the MIAC Playoff picture with a 1-0 win in St. Paul. Junior forward Samantha Engh scored the winning goal in the 83rd minute. Tori Boughton recorded the shutout in the nets for the Gusties. Coach Mike Stehlik’s squad continued its fine late season play having posted a 3-1-1 mark in its last five matches.

With the match tied at 0-0 late in the game, first year Gustie forward Jenna Iaizzo pushed a pass to Engh on the right side and she beat UST freshman goalie Baylee Reagan to the ball and lifted a shot into a wide-open net for the game’s only score at 82:17. It was Engh’s second goal of the season and Iaizzo’s third assist of the year.

The match was very evenly played with Gustavus recording 11 shots and St. Thomas 10. Gustavus goalkeeper Tori Boughton made seven saves as did Tommie goalkeeper Baylee Reagan. St. Thomas held a 6-3 edge in corner kicks.

After a tough 1-8-1 start to the season, this young Gustavus squad has really shown improvement in recent weeks. Coach Stehlik’s squad has posted a record of 3-1-0 in its last four MIAC matches with three shutout victories. The lone loss was a 3-0 setback to league champion Macalester last Saturday.

The Gusties will wrap up their season this weekend with a match at home against St. Catherine on Friday at 3:30 pm and a non-conference match at UW-Stevens Point on Sunday at 1:00 pm.
