Lauren Hom and Kara Smiley Finish Fifth at ITA Championships

The Gustavus women’s tennis doubles team of Lauren Hom and Kara Smiley finished fifth at the ITA Championships hosted by Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers. In singles play Lauren Hom will play for third place on Saturday morning.

The Gustavus women’s tennis doubles team of Lauren Hom and Kara Smiley finished fifth at the ITA Championships hosted by Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers. In singles play, Lauren Hom will play for third place on Saturday morning.

After getting upset in the first round, the top-seeded doubles team of Hom and Smiley rebounded to win two matches in the consolation bracket and claim fifth place. The duo defeated Rachel Holt/Alicia Menezes of Amherst, 5-7, 6-3, retired in the first round of consolation play and then defeated Jamie Chan/Linda Tien of Emory, 6-3, 6-3 in the fifth place match.

In singles play, Hom won her first round match on Thursday and then lost in the semifinals to Lindsay Hagerman of Washington and Lee 0-6, 2-6. She will now play Serena Burkard of Emory in the third place match on Saturday morning.
