Women’s Soccer Loses 5-0 to St. Benedict

The Gustavus women’s soccer team lost 5-0 to St. Benedict on Saturday afternoon in St. Joseph, Minn. The Blazers scored two goals in the first half and three goals in the second half earn the conference victory.

This afternoon the Blazer soccer team (5-3-0, 2-1-0 MIAC) ended a two game scoring drought in a 5-0 shutout win over the Gusties of Gustavus (1-4-1, 0-3-0). Saint Ben’s put the pressure on right away in the first half. Junior Lisa Bennett (Roseville/Totino-Grace H.S.) gave the Blazers an early 1-0 lead scoring her first goal of the game off a pass from senior Erin Doyle (Fargo, N.D./ Fargo North). Doyle knocked one in twenty minutes into the half to send the Blazers into halftime with a 2-0 lead.

Coming out of halftime the Gusties put a lot of pressure on the Blazers, but they were not able to make anything happen. Junior goalkeeper Amanda Broadbent (Arvada, Colo./D’Evelyn) came up with a huge save seven minutes in as Gustavus threatened to score off a corner kick. CSB kept its composure and gained a comfortable 3-0 lead off a goal from senior Megan McVoy (Omaha, Neb./Duchesne), assisted by Bennett. CSB found the back of the net two more times with goals from Bennett and first-year Adrianne Racek (Fargo, N.D./Fargo South H.S.) in route to a 5-0 win.

Broadbent recorded nine saves in the shutout for the Blazers who had a 27-9 shot advantage for the game.
