Men’s Soccer Defeats Concordia 2-0 Posted on September 18th, 2004 by

The Gustavus men’s soccer team extended its unbeaten streak to 23 with a 2-0 win over Concordia College on Saturday afternoon in Moorhead, Minn.

Jeffrey Johnson scored a superb goal to give Gustavus the lead just before halftime. In the 41st minute Jordan Iblings crossed the ball into the penalty box and the Cobber defense attempted to head the ball out. As the ball hung in the air, Johnson held off a defender and launched himself in the air for a bicycle kick. The acrobatic shot went into the right corner beating the Cobber goalkeeper.

The Gusties dominated in the second half enjoying nearly all of the possession. Head coach Larry Zelenz’s squad created several chances but could not put the ball into the back of the net. In the 77th minute Joe Hartwell made the score 2-0 in favor of the Gusties. Gustavus was awarded a direct free kick just outside the penalty area in the center of the field. The senior captain placed the ball into an empty net as the Cobbers attempted to organize their defense.

Goalkeeper Nate Hitch recorded his third shutout of the season on Saturday afternoon. Hitch faced 2 shots but was not required to make a save. Gustavus held a shot advantage of 24-2 and a corner kick advantage of 6-0.

The Gusties improve to 1-0-1 in the MIAC and 5-0-2 overall and will be back in action on Wednesday, September 22 at home against Northwestern College.
