Men’s Tennis Defeats Carthage 5-2 in First Round of NCAA Tournament Posted on May 1st, 2004 by

Top-seeded Gustavus advanced to the Central-Sub Region championship match with hard-fought 5-2 win over Carthage on Saturday afternoon at the Brown Outdoor Courts on the Gustavus campus in St. Peter, Minn. Gustavus will now face Coe (a 5-2 winner over Carleton on Saturday) at 12:00 pm (noon) on Sunday. The winner will advance to the NCAA Team Championship which will take place at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine, May 12-14.

Gustavus started its match by claiming the doubles point with decisive wins at the #1 and #2 positions. Adam Morgan and Brett Morse-Karzen defeated Dane Schmidgall and Brad Livingston, 8-4 at #1 and then Loren Collins and Ben Lundell defeated Michael Hicks and Steve Stitzell, 8-1 at #2.

In singles play, Gustavus recorded wins by Loren Collins at #1, Ben Lundell at #3, Jesse Brauer at #4 and Brett Morse-Karzen at #6 to make the final score 5-2.

Gustavus improves to 27-6 overall. With a win over Coe on Sunday, the Gusties would advance to the NCAA Team Finals for the 11th consecutive year.
