Baseball Splits with Bethel 8-5, 0-4

The Gustavus baseball team split with Bethel College 8-5 and 0-4 on Tuesday afternoon in St. Peter, Minn. Andy Schmidt, who struck out four batters and allowed two hits in two-and-one-thirds innings, recorded the win for Gustavus in game one.

The Gustavus baseball team split with Bethel College on Tuesday afternoon at Myrum Memorial Field in St. Peter, Minn. The Gusties are 14-9 overall and 3-5 in the MIAC, while the Royals are 17-5 overall and 4-2 in the conference.

In game one, Tyler Vrieze smacked a triple to right field and scored Aaron Madson to tie the game at 3-3 through four innings of play. In the fifth inning, Bryant Rogness led off with a walk. Tony Konicek doubled to center field to score Rogness from first base. Trent Larson drove in Konicek with a single to put the Gusties up 5-4. Gustavus added three runs in the sixth inning to secure the conference victory. Andy Schmidt, who struck out four batters and allowed two hits in two-and-one-thirds innings, recorded the win for Gustavus.

In game two, the Royals lead 2-0 through five innings of play. Bethel added two runs in the seventh inning to make the final 4-0. Tom Hutton, who pitched six-and-one-third innings, suffered the loss on the mound for Gustavus.

Gustavus will be back in MIAC action on Saturday. Coach Mike Carroll’s squad will travel to Minneapolis to face Augsburg College.
