Simpson (12-6) and Gustavus Adolphus (9-6) split a baseball doubleheader Monday afternoon in Indianola, Iowa. The Storm won the opener 6-1. Mike Donnenwerth opened the scoring for Simpson with his fifth home run of the season in the bottom of the second as the Storm added a run in the third, two in the fourth, and one run in the fifth and sixth. Gustavus’ only run was driven in by Tyler Vrieze who hit his first home run of the year in the top of the fifth.
Dan Rieck led the Simpson attack as he went 2-4 with a home run and three RBI’s. Chris Beall and Grant Fjetland each posted 2-3 performances. Dusty Kain drove in two runs. Four Simpson pitchers combined for a five-hitter with David Issacson getting the win.
The Gusties won the nightcap 6-4. Gustavus Adolphus scored all of their runs in the top of fourth as the first six batters of the inning charted a hit including Tony Konicek’s first homer of the year. Konicek was 3-4 in the game with a triple and two RBI’s. Gustavus’ Ricky Sabo tossed a complete game six hitter. He struck out two as he faced 27 batters. Rieck and and Fjetland each had two hits.
