The Gustavus women’s hockey team got off to a good start in its weekend series with St. Olaf by claiming a 3-0 win in Northfield. Gustie senior captain Katie Deschneau led the way with two goals and one assist. Gustavus improved to 10-3 overall and 7-2 in the MIAC.
The two teams battled to scoreless tie through the first period, even though Gustavus outshot Saint Olaf 15-3.
Sophomore forward Josefin Petterson scored what would turn out to be the game-winner at 3:32 of the second period. Annie Katz and Katie Deschneau were credited with the assists. The Gusties increased their lead to 2-0 when Katie Deschneau lit the lamp at 11:04 of the second period. Laura Stypulkowski picked up the assist. Gustavus held a 19-6 lead in shots and held a 2-0 throught two periods.
Deschneau wrapped up an impressive evening with her second goal at 11:58 of the third period. Stypulkowski and Andrea Peterson recorded assists.
Coach Mike Carroll’s squad claimed its eighth consecutive win and fifth straight shutout. The Gusties have not allowed a goal in the last 341 minutes of play. The last goal the squad allowed was at 18:19 of the first period against UW-River Falls on December 10.
Kara Meyer claimed the shutout in the nets for Gustavus and improved her record to 5-0-0 this season. She recorded 12 saves.
The two teams will close out the series on Saturday afternoon at 5:05 at Don Roberts Ice Rink in Saint Peter.
