The Gustavus men’s hockey team skated to a 1-1 tie with Concordia at Don Roberts Ice Rink in Saint Peter on Saturday night. Outstanding performances by Gustavus netminder Dan Melde and Concordia goaltender Ryan Gill highlighted the tightly played affair. Gustavus moves its record to 6-6-2 overall and 3-1-1 in the MIAC, while Concordia moves to 1-12-3 overall and 0-5-2 in the MIAC.

Gustavus opened the scoring on a goal by senior defenseman Brian Merchant at 11:30 of the first period. Assists were credited to Matt Duncan and Steven Dusich.

Concordia tied the game on a power play goal by Jon Rudnick at 17:22 of the first period. Matt Notermann and Andy Vix were credited with the assists.

There was no scoring in the second or third periods and the overtime.

Gustavus held a 38-27 advantage in shots on goal.

The contest was marred by penalties including 11 for 38 minutes on Gustavus and eight for 16 minutes for Concordia.

The two teams will play the second and final game of the series at Don Roberts Rink in Saint Peter on Saturday afternoon at 2:05 pm.
