The Gustavus women’s soccer team was blanked by St. Thomas 4-0 in wintry weather conditions on Wednesday in St. Peter. The loss eliminated the Gusties from the MIAC playoffs while the win kept the Tommies hopes alive for the regular season post-season crown.
Jenny Murray and Christine Williams each registered an assist and a goal. St. Thomas improved to 10-4-3 on the year while Gustavus dropped to 8-7-1.
St. Thomas scored one minute before halftime on a counter attack when Jenny Murray fed Christine Williams on her right side. Williams settled the ball and blasted it past the Gustie goalkeeper to net the game-winner.
The Tommies piled on three second-half goals to secure the four-goal win. Sarah Balgord scored on a pass from Jessica Magnuson in the game’s 63rd minute to put the Tommies up 2-0. Two minutes later Jade Crepps scored on a pass from Williams. Murray capped off the scoring barrage with a scoring shot from well-beyond the 18-yard box. Jess Christopherson went the distance in goal, making four saves for the shutout.
