The Gustavus men’s tennis team wrapped up a very successful Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Midwest Regional by claiming both singles and doubles titles on Sunday afternoon. Loren Collins (#2 seed) won the singles title by knocking off teammate Adam Morgan (#7 seed) 6-2, 6-3. In the doubles final, Gustavus’s Adam Morgan and Brett Morse-Karzen (#5 seed) upset the top-seeded team of Nick Barnes and Adam Elliot of Coe College 8-3. Morgan and Morse-Karzen trailed 3-0, love 40 before coming back to claim the 8-3 win. Collins, the singles champion and Morgan and Morse-Karzen, the doubles champions, receive ITA All-America honors by virtue of winning regional titles and advance to play in the ITA Small College Championships in Corpus Christi, Texas on October 16 through 19.
In the singles semifinals earlier in the day, Loren Collins defeated teammate Brett Morse-Karzen (#14 seed) 6-1, 6-2, while Adam Morgan defeated teammate Ben Lundell (#6 seed) 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 (5). Morgan trailed 5-0 in the third set before rallying to tie the set at 6-6 and force the tiebreaker. In the tiebreaker, Morgan again trailed Lundell 5-0 before coming back to win 7-5.
In the doubles semifinals, Barnes and Elliot of Coe trailed the Gustavus team of Collins and Lundell 7-3 before rallying to win the match 9-7. In the other semifinal, Morgan and Morse-Karzen defeated teammates Kyle Anderson and Roy Bryan 8-4.
The ITA Midwest Regional consisted of over 135 players from 23 institutions in the states of Minnesota, Wisconsin, Nebraska and Iowa. This was the 19th consecutive year that Gustavus has hosted the Midwest Regional.
