The Gustavus men’s soccer team improved its record to 7-1-0 with a 3-0 non-conference win over Northwestern College (St. Paul) on Tuesday afternoon. Junior forward Taylor Stein led the Gusties with two goals, while goalkeepers Andy Moulton and Nate Hitch each played a half to share the shutout.
Gustavus took a 1-0 lead when Stein took a pass from Jonathan Astry and slipped the ball on the ground past the outstretched Northwestern goaltender with 13 minutes remaining in the half (32:11). The Gusties increased their lead to 2-0 with just :30 seconds remaining in the second half when Bobby Kroog headed a ball into the upper right corner off a corner kick from Joe Hartwell. Gustavus led 2-0 at the intermission.
The Gusties maintained their 2-0 lead until late in the second half when Taylor Stein knocked in a rebound off of a hard shot by teammate Jordan Iblings with 16 minutes left in the contest (74:07). It was first time that Stein has tallied a two-goal game in his collegiate career.
Gustavus controlled play in the entire contest outshooting the Eagles 25-0 and holding a 13-0 advantage in corner kicks. David Keller suffered the loss in the nets for Northwestern. He recorded 10 saves and allowed three goals.
The Gusties improve to 7-0-1 on the season while Northwestern falls to 7-2-0.
