Women’s Tennis Team Wraps Up Play at Gopher Invitational Posted on September 14th, 2003 by

The Gustavus women’s tennis team finished playing in the three-day1st Annual Gopher Invitational hosted by the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis on Sunday.
Lyndsey Palen, playing in the number two singles flight, was the farthest Gustie to advance at the nine-team flighted tournament through the first two days of competition. She played in Sunday’s championship match against Denver’s Jenny Trettin. Trettin handed Palen a straight sets 6-2, 6-1 defeat.

In the number four singles flight, Gustavus teammates Darcy Haubrick and Hannah Frericks squared off in the third-place match. Haubrick defeated Frericks 7-6, 7-6.

In both of the doubles flights, Gustavus tandems earned consolation victories. Hom/Schmitt knocked off teammates Palen/Bashleben in number one doubles 8-6. Gaard/Smiley tallied an 8-5 win over UW-Milwaukee’s Spiel/Kuranz in the second doubles flight.

Gustavus sent four doubles teams and eight singles players to the Invitational, which consisted of seven NCAA Division I schools (Denver, Drake, Iowa State, Illinois-Chicago, Minnesota, Wisconsin-Green Bay, and Wisconsin-Milwaukee), one Division II school (North Dakota), and one Division III school (Gustavus).

Head Coach Jon Carlson’s team continues the fall portion of its schedule by hosting the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Midwest Regional on September 26-28 in St. Peter. The three-day event will feature many of the top players from around the Midwest competing for the chance to advance to the National ITA Championships later this fall in Corpus Christi, Texas.
