Men’s Soccer Remains Unbeaten, Defeats Viterbo 1-0 Posted on September 13th, 2003 by

The Gustavus men’s soccer team claimed a 1-0 win over Viterbo University in St. Peter, Minnesota on Saturday afternoon. Midfielder Bobby Kroog scored the gamewinner for the Gusties just five minutes into the second half (40:40). Kroog headed in a cross from senior outside back Joe Palmer from 18 yards out. With the win, Gustavus improves to 5-0-0 on the season, while the V-Hawks fall to 0-5-0.

The Gusties recorded their third consecutive 1-0 win and Kroog has tallied the gamewinner each time. Kroog has now scored seven of the 10 goals that Gustavus has scored in five games this season. Gustavus controlled play throughout the contest and outshot the V-Hawks 13-2. The Gusties also held an 11-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Despite Gustavus controlling play, Viterbo nearly tied the score late in the second half when Kahil Taylor bounced a shot off the crossbar from 20 yards out. Viterbo goalkeeper Dustin Naugle made six saves in the contest including several key saves on strong Gustavus scoring opportunities. Gustie goaltender Andrew Moulton picked up the win and recorded his third shutout of the season while making one save.

Gustavus, which is currentlly ranked #2 in the West Region and #14 nationally will now open Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play with a home match against
St. Olaf on Wednesday, September 17 at 4 pm.
