Mya Smith-Dennis Named April Male Student-Athlete Of The Month
After claiming its unparalleled 24th consecutive MIAC regular season title last Saturday, the Gustavus men’s tennis team is prepared to make another run through the conference playoffs this weekend with hopes of reaching the NCAA Championships. The 20th-ranked Gusties have benefitted from strong play throughout their lineup and that is undoubtedly true at the No. 1 doubles and No. 2 singles positions. Sophomore Mya Smith-Dennis had an outstanding final month of the regular season and for his efforts, the Office of Sports Information has named Smith-Dennis Male Student-Athlete of the Month for April, presented by Thrivent Financial.
Men’s Tennis Cruises To Three MIAC Victories
The Gustavus men's tennis team proved its value in the MIAC Saturday with three convincing victories over Concordia (9-0), Bethel (8-1) and Macalester (9-0) in St. Peter, Minn. The three wins improve the Gusties to 5-2 overall and 5-0 in the MIAC. Gustavus won 17-of-18 singles competitions in straight sets and all nine doubles matches on the day.
Men’s Tennis Opens Season With 5-4 Win Over UW-Eau Claire, Valentini Picks Up First Win As Collegiate Head Coach
The Gustavus men's tennis team started its 2010 season on a positive note with a hard-fought 5-4 win over UW-Eau Claire at the Swanson Tennis Center on Saturday evening. The Gusties got off to a slow start losing two of three doubles matches, however they rallied to win the match by claiming four of the six doubles matches and slipped past the Blugolds by a point.
Tommy Valentini Named Head Men’s Tennis Coach
Tommy Valentini, a native of Duluth, Minn. has been named the head men's tennis coach at Gustavus Adolphus College. Valentini, who has been an assistant coach for the Gusties for the past three years, will replace Steve Wilkinson who is retiring after serving as the head coach for the past 39 years.
