Trailing St. Olaf by two points with six seconds remaining in the game, the Gustavus men’s basketball team had possession of the ball as Gary Cooper (Sr., Detroit, Mich.) advanced it up to Chris Narum (Sr., Eagan, Minn.). Narum pump-faked and dribbled over for an open look at a three-pointer, but his shot at the last second was blocked in a controversial finish, as some argue a foul was committed on the shot. Nonetheless, the Gusties lost 82-80 in another heartbreaking defeat, dropping to 9-13 overall and 6-11 in the MIAC, and have been eliminated from playoff contention.
In the waning moments of Friday night’s game at Macalester College, the Gustavus men’s basketball team took its first lead of the second half at 64-63 with 1:08 remaining, but the Scots responded with five unanswered points to claim a 68-63 victory at the Leonard Center. The loss snaps an eight-game win streak against Macalester as the Gusties fall to 3-4 overall and 1-3 in the MIAC.
Despite holding a lead for most of the first half and early in the second, the Gustavus men’s basketball team lost 82-73 at Bethel University on Wednesday night. With the loss, the Gusties fall to 3-3 overall and 1-2 in the MIAC, while the Royals remain unbeaten at 7-0 overall and 2-0 in the league.
The Gustavus men’s basketball team got off to a quick start Saturday at Augsburg College with a 9-2 lead after the first three minutes of play, but the Auggies responded with a 14-2 run to take a lead they would not let go of the rest of the way resulting in a 79-70 final score. The loss is the first in MIAC play by the Gusties as they fall to 1-1 in the league and 3-2 overall.
The Gustavus men’s basketball team beat Simpson College 71-62 in its home opener Saturday night to improve to 1-1 on the season. The Gusties started the second half with the hot hand, going on a 19-6 run for their largest lead of the night at 53-33, propelling them to victory.
The Gustavus men’s basketball team opened the season with a tightly contested 75-73 loss at the University of Northwestern-St. Paul on Saturday. The Gusties held a six-point lead with 2:26 remaining in the game, but the Eagles went on a 9-2 run to take a 74-73 lead with 37 seconds left in the game. Gustavus had an opportunity to tie the game with the last shot as time expired, but it bounced off the rim and UNW escaped with the victory.
The Gustavus men’s basketball team is set to begin its 2015-16 campaign this weekend as it travels to the Twin Cities for a non-conference test against the University of Northwestern-St. Paul. Tipoff between the Gusties and Eagles is set for 3 p.m. Saturday at the UNW Gymnasium.
