Men’s Tennis Earns ITA Academic Awards

The Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced the 2017 All-Academic Teams and Scholar-Athletes on Tuesday. In all, 720 teams and 3,908 student-athletes across all five divisions of college tennis were honored. The Gustavus men's tennis team earned the All-Academic Team award as well as 10 Gusties earning the Scholar-Athlete award.

Five members of the Gustavus men's tennis team were named to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference teams, announced Thursday by the MIAC office. Mohanad Alhouni (Jr., Tripoli, Libya) and Chase Johnson (So., Golden Valley, Minn.) were named to both the singles and doubles team, Zach Ekstein (Jr., Eagan, Minn.) was named to the singles squad while Tommy Entwistle (Jr., Sioux Falls, S.D.) and Patrick Whaling (So., Manikob Sabot, Va.) earned a spot on the doubles team.

Alhouni Earns Second MIAC Men’s Tennis Athlete Of The Week Accolade

The No. 23-ranked Gustavus Adolphus College men's tennis team won a pair of big matches Saturday behind a perfect 4-0 day from Mohanad Alhouni (Jr., Tripoli, Libya). The Gusties are now winners of 11-straight matches, and 11-2 overall and 3-0 in conference play. First, Gustavus took down No. 17-ranked UW-Whitewater 8-1, with Alhouni winning 6-3, 6-4, at No. 1 singles and 8-4 at No. 1 doubles. Then, the team earned a 9-0 MIAC sweep of Macalester, with Alhouni contributing a No. 1 singles win by the score of 8-3, and he avenged a 2016 singles loss against the Scot's Josh Doyle at No. 1 singles (6-2, retired).

Gustavus men's tennis player Mohanad Alhouni got off to a great start in 2017 as the Gusties opened against three nationally-ranked opponents. Alhouni went 2-1 in singles play, including a pair of straight-sets wins against nationally-ranked foes, and he also went 2-1 in doubles matches against No. 24 Whitman, No. 31 Pacific and No. 9 Pomona-Pitzer. Alhouni's singles wins were 6-4, 6-2, against Whitman's No. 40-ranked player, and 7-6, 6-1, against the nation's No. 38-ranked player from Pomona Pitzer.

The Gustavus men's tennis team fell by a score of 6-3 to Whitman College in its 2017 spring season opener. The No. 20 ranked Gusties notched two singles wins and one doubles win while No. 24 ranked Whitman claimed four singles wins and two doubles victories.
