Miller, Rice Named D3hoops.com All-West Region
D3hoops.com released its 2018 Women’s All-Region Teams on Tuesday morning and Gustavus student-athletes Mikayla Miller (Sr., Goodhue, Minn.) and Miranda Rice (Sr., Forest Lake, Minn.) received recognition. Miller was named to the five-player All-West Region Second Team for the second consecutive year, while Rice was named to the six-player Third Team.
Seniors Lead Gustavus Women’s Basketball To NCAA Tournament Win Over Rose-Hulman
Friday evening’s NCAA women’s basketball opening round matchup between Gustavus and Rose-Hulman lived up to the moniker of “March Madness” with the game going down to the wire, but in the end the Gusties came out on top 60-52 to claim their first NCAA tournament win since 2003. The Gusties started the game with a 17-4 lead in the first six minutes of the game and never trailed. Gustavus advances to the round of 32 tomorrow at 7 p.m.
Miller, Rice, Gonsorowski Honored In MIAC Women’s Hoops Postseason Awards
The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference announced its women’s basketball postseason awards Wednesday afternoon, with four Gustavus student-athletes received recognition. Mikayla Miller (Sr., Goodhue, Minn.) and Miranda Rice (Sr., Forest Lake, Minn.) were named All-Conference, Ava Gonsorowski (Fy., Esko, Minn.) was named Rookie of the Year, and Kendall Thompson (Jr., Eden Prairie, Minn.) earned All-Conference Honorable Mention.
Early Lead Fades Away As Women’s Basketball Falls In MIAC Championship Game
The Gustavus women’s basketball team was unable to upend league champion St. Thomas Saturday in the MIAC playoff title game, losing 62-56. The Gusties led after the first quarter, but seven unanswered points in the second quarter gave the Tommies the advantage for good as they secured an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. Gustavus will wait to see if it receives an at-large bid when the NCAA announces the championship field Monday afternoon.

A suffocating first half defensive performance by the Gustavus women’s basketball team Tuesday set the tone as it cruised to a 65-38 win over St. Catherine in a MIAC playoff quarterfinal game. The Gusties held the Wildcats to eight points in the first quarter and just three points in the second for a total of 11 after 20 minutes of play – the fewest points allowed in any half all season long. With the win, the Gusties advance to the semifinal round Thursday night at No. 2 seed Saint Benedict.

A rough first quarter put the Gustavus women’s basketball team in a 13-point hole, one it was not able to climb out of in a 66-62 loss Wednesday at Saint Benedict. The Gusties outscored the Blazers in the final three quarters but it wasn’t enough to complete the comeback as they fell to 19-5 overall and 13-4 in the MIAC, while the Blazers improve to 22-2 overall and 16-1 in the league.
