Defensive Playmakers Guide Football To 38-21 Win At Carleton

Four interceptions and two that went for touchdowns propelled the Gustavus football team to a 38-21 victory at Carleton College Saturday in the season finale. Holding on to a slim 24-21 advantage midway through the fourth quarter, the Gustie defense stood tall with two interception returns for touchdowns on consecutive Carleton possessions. The Gusties edged the Knights 378-361 in total yards to finish the season 5-5 overall and 3-5 in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

Football’s Early Lead Results In 23-3 Victory At St. Olaf

An early 14-0 lead in the first quarter set the tone for the Gustavus football team’s 23-3 victory over St. Olaf on Saturday. The Gusties outgained the Oles 407-209 in total yards, while forcing the home team to punt seven times and commit three turnovers. Gustavus snaps a four-game skid in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, improving to 4-4 overall and 2-4 in the league, while the Oles fall to 2-6 overall and 1-5 in the conference.

Football Kicks Off 100th Season With Decisive 35-6 Win At Westminster

The Gustavus football team started its 100th season on the right foot, defeating Westminster College 35-6 on Saturday afternoon. The Gusties scored touchdowns on their first two possessions and never looked back. Gustavus accumulated 479 yards of offense on 275 passing and 204 rushing. Luke Martinez (Sr., Lenexa, Kan.) had a breakout game after missing all last season due to injury as he scored three touchdowns with 129 yards on 21 carries. In his first start under center, Michael Veldman (So., Becker, Minn.) was extremely efficient, completing 21-of-25 passes for 266 yards and a touchdown. Velman also added an six-yard rushing touchdown. Jordan Kahlow (So., Le Sueur, Minn.) led the defense with six tackles.
