Four Gusties Named MIAC Football First Team All-Conference
The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference released its football postseason awards Tuesday and four Gustavus student-athletes were named First Team All-Conference – Matt Berkner (Sr., Sleepy Eye, Minn.), Brayton Finch (Jr., Mount Morris, Ill.), Brice Panning (Jr., Hamburg, Minn.), and Michael Veldman (Jr., Becker, Minn.).
Theiler, Decker Named MIAC Football All-Conference, Seven Others Make Second Team
The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference released its 2016 Football Postseason Awards Tuesday and Gustavus is well represented with two student-athletes on the First Team, seven on the Second Team, and four honorable mentions.
Jordan Kahlow Named MIAC Football Defensive Player Of The Week
Gustavus sophomore defensive back Jordan Kahlow provided the spark that pulled the Gusties away for good in Saturday's 38-21 win at Carleton. With the score 24-21 in favor of Gustavus midway through the fourth quarter and the Knights driving into Gustavus territory, Kahlow intercepted a pass at midfield and returned it 50 yards for a touchdown. Kahlow finished the game with the pick-six and four tackles. He finished the season with two interceptions returned for touchdowns and his 96 interception return yards are the most in the MIAC. He also ranked second on the team with 50 tackles and had four pass breakups.
Football Comes Up Short In 42-40 Shootout At Hamline
The Gustavus and Hamline football teams battled to the bitter end Saturday afternoon at Klas Field, but a touchdown late in the fourth quarter by the host Pipers proved to be the difference in a 42-40 loss for the Gusties. The defeat snaps a 10-game winning streak against the Pipers and marked the first time since 1975 Gustavus lost a game after scoring at least 40 points. Gustavus moves to 3-1 overall and 1-1 in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, while the Pipers remain unbeaten at 3-0 overall and 1-0 in the league.
