The National Collegiate Athletic Association announced the team and individual competitors for its Women’s National Collegiate Gymnastics Championships and Gustavus’s Amanda Malo (Jr., Greenwood, Minn.) has been selected as an alternate in the all-around competition at the Minneapolis regional, which will take place 4 p.m. April 7 at the University of Minnesota.

Aryn DeGrood Named WIAC Women’s Gymnastics Coach Of The Year

The Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Thursday announced Gustavus gymnastics coach Aryn DeGrood as its 2017 Women’s Gymnastics Coach of the Year based on voting conducted by the league coaches. DeGrood has directed the Gusties to a record-setting season as they have tallied six of the program’s all-time top 10 team scores this year alone. She has also coached three gymnasts that have qualified for the National Collegiate Gymnastics Association Championship, which takes place March 31-April 1 at the University of Wisconsin-Stout.

Gymnastics Takes Seventh At WIAC/NCGA West Regional

The Gustavus gymnastics team competed in its final meet of the season Friday at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference/National Collegiate Gymnastics Association West Regional, hosted by Winona State University. The Gusties took seventh of eight teams, scoring 185.625, which is also the third best team score in program history. Gustavus scored 47.625 on floor, 47.050 on vault, 46.475 on bars, and 44.475 on beam.

The Gustavus gymnastics team hosted the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Friday in its final home meet of the season, falling by a score of 188.900-184.725. The Gusties’ total score is the fourth best in program history as they now prepare for the regional qualifier next weekend.

The Gustavus gymnastics team competed in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference dual meet Friday against the University of Wisconsin-Stout and came out on the short side of a 185.350-183.000 decision. Alex Kopp (Sr., Wayzata, Minn.) and Amanda Malo (So., Greenwood, Minn.) highlighted the Gusties performance with a pair of first place finishes. Koop took first on the vault with a score of 9.500, while Malo took first in the all-around at 36.700. The all-around first place finish is the first of Malo’s young career.

Twice In A Row, Gymnastics Tallies Second Highest Team Score In Program History

For the second straight meet, the Gustavus gymnastics team posted the second highest team score in program history, totaling 186.275 Friday in a triad against Division I programs Iowa State and Illinois State. Iowa State won the meet with a 195.025, while Illinois State took second at 192.700.

The Gustavus gymnastics team Friday took third of three at the John Zuerlein Invitational, hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Stout, tallying a score of 181.925. Winona State won the triad with a score of 187.650, while UW-Stout took second at 185.700.
