The Gustavus volleyball team claimed the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular season championship outright Wednesday night as it defeated Hamline University in four sets 25-19, 25-27, 25-19 and 25-23. The conference title is Gustavus’ first since 1986 and fifth overall. The Gusties also extended their program record win streak to 24 matches and now own a 24-2 overall record with a 10-0 mark in the MIAC.

The Gustavus volleyball team returns to the friendly confines of Gus Young Court at 7 p.m. tonight as it hosts Hamline University. The Gusties enter the match after a pair of five-set road victories to improve to 23-2 overall and 9-0 in the MIAC, while the Pipers are coming off a 3-1 win over St. Olaf last Saturday to move to 11-13 overall and 3-6 in the league. A Gustavus win tonight would clinch the MIAC regular season championship outright, which is the first conference title since 1986.

Alyssa Taylor Named MIAC Volleyball Hitter-Of-The-Week

The Gustavus volleyball team continued its remarkable run with a pair of huge five-set MIAC wins last week to clinch at least a share of the conference championship and extend its winning streak to 23 victories in a row. Leading the way was senior middle hitter Alyssa Taylor (Trimont, Minn./Martin County West), who accumulated 27 kills, a .230 hitting percentage, nine digs, eight blocks and two aces in the two victories. For her performance, the MIAC sports information directors honored Taylor Monday with the MIAC Volleyball Hitter-of-the-Week award.

A 31-year old record stands no longer as the Gustavus volleyball team won its 20th and 21st straight matches Saturday, setting a new program record for consecutive victories. The Gusties defeated both Simpson College and Loras College in straight sets, breaking the previous program record of 20 consecutive wins to start the 1984 season. The Gusties are now 21-2 on the season.
