Women’s Hockey Impressive in 5-1 Win Over Plattsburgh, Advances to First Ever NCAA Title Game

The Gustavus Adolphus College women's hockey team defeated Plattsburgh State 5-1 in an NCAA Division III semifinal game on Friday afternoon at Middlebury College, advancing to the national championship game tomorrow night.

The Gustavus women's hockey team, making its ninth Frozen Four appearance, is set to take on Plattsburgh State today at 3 p.m. EST at Middlebury College. The Gusties enter the national semifinal with a 24-3-2 overall record after defeating UW-River Falls 5-3 in the quarterfinals, while the defending national champion Cardinals are 25-2-1 overall after beating Colby College 3-2 in overtime.

Gustavus senior defender Kayla Vrieze (Eagan) on Thursday earned West First Team honors on the CCM/AHCA Women's Division III All-America Hockey Team. 

Women’s Hockey Advances to NCAA Semifinals, Wins 5-3 at UW-River Falls

Gustavus women's hockey erased two deficits Saturday to upset No. 2-ranked UW-River Falls 5-3 in an NCAA quarterfinal game. The Gusties, now 24-3-2 overall, advance to the national semifinals where they will take on Plattsburgh State next weekend. 

Schoenrock, Vrieze Earn MIAC Elite 22 Awards

The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) recognized some of its best and brightest winter sport student-athletes on Thursday with the announcement of the Elite 22 Awards. Two Gustavus student-athletes received the award as Betsy Schoenrock (Jr., New Richland) is the women’s basketball recipient and Kayla Vrieze (Sr., Eagan) is the women’s hockey recipient.

Women’s Hockey Bends But Doesn’t Break in NCAA Opening Round Victory

Gustavus women's hockey spent more time in its defensive zone than it has in quite some time Wednesday night, but stood tall against a physical UW-Eau Claire squad and came away with a 3-0 victory in the opening round of the NCAA tournament. The Gusties, who used two empty net goals in the final two minutes to seal the win, improve to 23-3-2 overall and will travel to UW-River Falls on Saturday for a quarterfinal matchup. 

Women’s Hockey Has Six Named All-Conference, Carroll Coach of the Year

The MIAC announced its 2021-22 women's hockey awards on Monday and six Gustavus student-athletes received All-Conference honors, while Mike Carroll was named MIAC Coach of the Year. All-Conference honors went to Hailey Holland (Jr., Aberdeen, S.D.), Molly McHugh (Jr., Minnetonka), Emily Olson (Jr., Delano), Brooke Power (So., Lakeville), Tina Press (Sr., Cottage Grove), and Kayla Vrieze (Sr., Eagan).

Women’s Hockey Set to Host UW-Eau Claire Wednesday in NCAA Opening Round

The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) on Sunday night announced the 10-team field for its Division III Women’s Ice Hockey Championship and Gustavus (22-3-2) is selected to host UW-Eau Claire (23-5-0) in the first round on Wednesday, March 9. Puck drop at Don Roberts Ice Rink is slated for 7 p.m. 

Women’s Hockey Punches Ticket to NCAA Tourney, Rolls Past Hamline 6-1 for MIAC Playoff Title

For the 15th time in program history, the Gustavus women's hockey team is going dancing at the NCAA tournament after a decisive 6-1 victory over Hamline in the MIAC playoff championship Saturday at Don Roberts Ice Rink. After winning the MIAC regular season title, the Gusties rolled through the playoffs by outscoring their opponents 16-2 to capture the program's 13th MIAC playoff championship.
