Pengilly Signs Professional Baseball Contract with Sioux Falls

Recent Gustavus graduate Cole Pengilly (Le Sueur, Minn.) signed a rookie contract with the Sioux Falls Canaries of the American Association of Independent Professional Baseball on Tuesday. Pengilly is the second Gustie in the past three years to sign a professional baseball contract as Adam Stockwell ’19 also played for the Canaries in 2019.

The Gustavus baseball team was able to squeeze past Bethel 9-8 in its first MIAC playoff elimination game Friday before suffering a season-ending 10-8 loss to St. Thomas in the second game of the day.

Baseball Knocked Around in 17-5 Playoff Loss

The Gustavus baseball team took one on the chin Thursday evening with a 17-5 loss to Saint Mary’s in the MIAC playoffs. The Gusties drop to 26-6 overall and will face Bethel at 3 p.m. Friday in an elimination game.

Seven Named MIAC Baseball All-Conference, Novak Player of the Year

The MIAC announced its baseball awards Tuesday and Gustavus has seven student-athletes on the All-Conference Team, including the league’s Player of the Year. Bruce Novak (So., Cleveland) was voted as the Max Molock Player of the Year and joining him on the All-MIAC Team are Ethan Mocchi (Sr., Champlin), Jack Hanson (Jr., Minnetonka), Cole Pengilly (Sr., Le Sueur), Dalton Thelen (Jr., Cold Spring), Weston Lombard (Sr., Stillwater), and Damon Rademacher (Sr., Princeton).

Baseball Secures No. 2 Seed in MIAC Playoffs, Splits with Carleton

No. 24 Gustavus baseball needed just one win Saturday in its MIAC play-in doubleheader against Carleton and had to sweat it out after dropping the first game 8-3, but rebounded with a 6-2 win in the series finale.

Baseball Wins Game One of MIAC Play-In Series 8-2 at Carleton

No. 24 Gustavus baseball claimed an 8-2 victory Friday at Carleton in the first game of the MIAC play-in series. Weston Lombard (Sr., Stillwater) improved his record to 7-0 with a complete game effort on the mound, moving the Gusties (25-4) one win away from securing the No. 2 seed and a first round bye in the MIAC playoffs.

Baseball Splits at Northwestern in Top-Five Regional Matchup

No. 24 Gustavus baseball concluded its non-conference schedule Wednesday evening with a doubleheader split at Northwestern-St. Paul. The Gusties won game one 1-0 before falling 3-2 in the night cap. Gustavus, ranked No. 2 in the Midwest Region, moves to 24-4 overall, while Northwestern, ranked No. 5 in the region, moves to 29-9.

MIAC Baseball Play-In Series Moved Up to Friday/Saturday

The Gusties and Knights will play one nine-inning game at 4 p.m. Friday at Carleton, followed by two nine-inning games starting at 1 p.m. Saturday at Gustavus.

Baseball Rallies Late Again, Defeats Saint Mary’s 6-4

The Gustavus baseball team closed out the conference regular season Sunday with a 6-4 victory over Saint Mary’s. The Gusties broke an eighth inning tie with a pair of runs and held on for the win, improving to 23-3 overall and 18-3 in the MIAC.

Baseball Walks Off for Second Time This Week, Sweeps Augsburg

For the second time this week, the Gustavus baseball team erased a late-inning deficit for a comeback walk-off victory to secure a doubleheader sweep. The Gusties on Thursday defeated Augsburg 9-2 in game one before eliminating a 5-2 deficit in the eighth inning of game two, scoring two in the eighth and two in the ninth for a 6-5 walk-off winner.
