Women’s Hockey Cruises Past St. Olaf 7-0

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Gustavus women’s hockey team Friday opened its MIAC series with a decisive 7-0 win over St. Olaf. The No. 6-ranked Gusties improve to 9-2 overall and 5-0 in the MIAC while the Oles drop to 7-6 overall and 1-5 in the league.

Brooke Power (So., Lakeville) gave the Gusties their first goal at the 15:22 mark of the first period, assisted by Tina Press (Sr., Cottage Grove) and Emily Olson (Jr., Delano). Power scored her second goal of the game just over three minutes into the second period with the help of Clara Billings (Jr., Rochester) and Olson. With less than two minutes remaining in the second, Olson put the Gusties up 3-0, assisted by Billings and Hailey Holland (Jr., Aberdeen, S.D.).

Gustavus exploded for four more goals in the third frame. Jordyn Peterson (Sr., Brookings, S.D.) scored at the 2:35 mark, assisted by Jamie Byrne (Sr., Loretto). Two minutes later, Sophia Coltvet (So., Arden Hills) scored with assists going to Holland and Press. Holland put the Gusties up 6-0 at the 14:30 mark with an unassisted goal and 21 seconds later, Power completed the hat trick with the help of Olson’s third assist.

The Gusties outshot the Oles 51-4. Katie McCoy (Jr., Grafton, Wis.) made three saves in just over 30 minutes in net while Maria Widen (Fy., Burnsville) made one during the remainder of the game.

Gustavus and St. Olaf conclude the series at 2 p.m. Saturday in Saint Peter.
