WINONA, Minn. – The Gustavus gymnastics team capped its 2021 season Thursday with a 180.000-179.875 victory over Winona State. The Gusties finish with a 2-2 record in their four dual meets this year.

“What a fitting end to a unpredictable year,” Head Coach Aryn DeGrood said. “Tonight was one of those night where we had a lot of mix emotions and we rode that wave throughout the meet.”

The Gusties’ best performance of the meet was on the floor with a cumulative score of 46.550. They scored 46.150 on vault, 44.925 on beam, and 42.375 on bars. Annie Corbett (So., Brookfield, Wis.) and Brooke Merila (Jr., St. Michael) were the only two all-around competitors, scoring 37.375 and 35.500, respectively.

“We started out rocky on bars and the team fought hard to bring it back,” DeGrood said. “And they did a great job at it. We had solid vault and floor. And beam brought it up strong. Bodie and I are so proud of the fight they showed tonight and throughout the entire season.”

Corbett tied for first place on the floor with a score of 9.45. Merila place third with a 9.375 on the floor. Corbett also won the vault, tallying a score of 9.375. Katy Cash (Fy., Canton, Mich.) placed second at 9.25. Corbett won her third event on the beam, posting a 9.375. Emma Esteb (So., Woodbury) placed second with a 9.35. On the bars, Corbett led the Gusties with a 9.175, taking second place.

“What a fitting end to our seniors, Alyssa and Annie’s careers. They hit all of their routines and made such a big impact on our program. I am thrilled we were able to send them off on a victory, on such a high note.

“Annie Corbett had the best overall meet of the season. She led the team on all four events, winning three and all-around and taking second in one.
“We were so excited to have an opportunity to compete this year so to come out with two victories and hard fought meets is icing on the cake. We are grateful to have had this opportunity to do it together, the do what we set out to do to start the year. We celebrated the sport we love, we celebrated each other, and we celebrated to chance to wear black and gold.”
