SAINT PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus men’s basketball team continues its road trip Wednesday as it takes on No. 2 Saint John’s. The Gusties enter the contest 8-10 overall and 8-5 in the MIAC, while the Johnnies are 17-1 overall and 13-0 in the league.
The Series: Wednesday night’s game marks the 185th meeting between Gustavus and Saint John’s with the Gusties leading the all-time series 111-73. The Johnnies have held the edge in the series as of late, winning the past seven matchups, most recently claiming a 66-52 victory on Dec. 11 in Saint Peter. Jubie Alade led the Johnnies with 19 points, while Logan Rezac and Peter Lundquist both scored 11 for the Gusties.
Scouting the Gusties: Gustavus is coming off an 80-72 loss at Macalester on Saturday and is 5-2 in the last seven games. Through 13 conference games, the Gusties average 76.3 points and shoot 45.1 percent from the floor, ranking fourth and seventh, respectively, in the league. They lead the conference in blocking average (4.6) and defensive rebounds (28.5). The Gusties rank second in the MIAC in free throws made per game (12.8), free throws attempted (17.8), total rebounds (37.8), rebound margin (+2.6) and opponents’ field goal percentage (41.2). Kaleb Feahn leads the offense with 14.7 points per game and shoot 45.9 percent from the field. Logan Rezac leads the starters with 13.1 points and 6.9 rebounds. Nolan Malo also averages double figures with 10.6 points. Jake Guse tops the MIAC leaderboard with 39 total blocks. He also contributes 9.0 points and 6.4 rebounds.
Scouting the Johnnies: After losing its first game of the season to Nebraska Wesleyan, Saint John’s has rattled of 17 consecutive wins and is ranked No. 2 in the nation according to the latest D3hoops.com poll. The Johnnies most recently beat Carleton 78-71 on Saturday. Through 13 conference games the Johnnies lead the league in field goal percentage (50.9), three-point percentage (41.0), free throws made (15.5), free throws attempted (20.2), offensive rebounds (10.9), total rebounds (38.8), rebound margin (+11.3), points allowed (59.4), opponents field goal percentage (38.0), and opponents three point percentage (30.4). Jubie Alade leads a quartet of Johnnies who average double digit scoring. Alade averages 19.1 points (3rd/MIAC) and shoots 58.8 percent from the field. Zach Hanson averages 11.8 points, Lucas Walford is at 11.7 points and 10.2 rebounds (1st/MIAC), and Colton Codute averages 10.6 points.
