Men’s Soccer Defeats Hamline 3-0

The Gustavus men’s soccer team defeated Hamline University 3-0 on Saturday afternoon in St. Paul, Minn. Chad Ransom, Caleb Bousu and Alex Groth were the goal scorers for Gustavus.

The Gustavus men’s soccer team defeated Hamline University 3-0 on Saturday afternoon in St. Paul, Minn. The Gusties improve to 6-1-1 in the MIAC and 12-1-2 overall, while the Pipers fall to 2-5-0 in the MIAC and 9-6-0 overall.

The Gusties took the lead in minute 40 with a goal from Chad Ransom. Mike Butterworth held off Hamline defenders and passed the ball back to Ransom just outside the penalty box. Ransom hammered the shot with his left foot into the side-netting of the goal past the Hamline goalkeeper. Just before halftime, Hamline was awarded a penalty-kick. Gustavus goalkeeper Andy Moulton denied Hamline the equalizer when he dove to his left to save the kick.

Gustavus enjoyed the majority of possession in the second half creating several chances to score. In the 55th minute Caleb Bousu settled a clearance by the Piper defense and took a shot from approximately 25-yards out. Bousu’s shot curled into the upper left corner of the goal to give the Gusties a two-goal lead. Alex Groth scored the final goal for Gustavus in minute 86. Hamline played a ball back to its goalkeeper and Groth kept the pressure on. The goalkeeper took a bad touch and Groth was there to take it away and place it into the open net.

Gustavus goalkeeper Andy Moulton made three saves to record his seventh win and eighth shutout of the season.

Gustavus will be back in St. Paul, Minn. on Friday, October 22 to play Macalester College. The game is scheduled to start at 7:30pm.
