AUSTIN, Texas – The 2019 Google Cloud Academic All-America® Division III softball teams, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), were released Tuesday and Gustavus junior Aly Freeman (Omaha, Neb.) was named to the 12-member Third Team.
The Google Cloud Academic All-America® Teams recognize the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom.
Freeman, a biology major with a 4.00 GPA, earned her first All-Conference honor after being named honorable mention last season. Freeman, who was named to the All-MIAC team as a pitcher, had a successful season as one of the team’s two primary pitchers, as well as a hitter in the middle of the lineup. On the mound, Freeman compiled an 8-9 record overall, pitching 101.2 innings, posting an ERA of 2.96, and striking out 70 batters. At the plate, the Omaha native hit .349 while slugging a team-leading .670. The power threat was tied for the MIAC lead with eight home runs and she also posted a team-best 11 doubles and 30 RBI. Freeman also led the team with 11 multiple-hit games and nine multiple-RBI games. She played 17 games at pitcher and 18 at third base.
Freeman earns the 112th all-time CoSIDA Academic All-America award in Gustavus Athletics history and is the 10th softball player (first since Lisa Klass in 2012). Gustavus has the 12th most Academic All-Americans in NCAA Division III history and the most in the MIAC. Head Baseball Coach Brad Baker ’80 earned the College’s first Academic All-America award in 1979.
