Softball Set for a Trio of Doubleheaders to Close Out Season

SAINT PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus softball team will close out its 2019 campaign this upcoming week as they play in three doubleheaders on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday. The Black and Gold will host Augsburg Sunday with the games beginning at noon, then travel to Duluth Monday to take on St. Scholastica with games beginning at 2:30 before closing out their season hosting Bethany Lutheran on Tuesday with games starting at 2 p.m.

The Series vs. Augsburg

Sunday’s contests will mark the 88th and 89th all-time meeting between the two teams with the Gusties currently holding a 49-38 advantage. The last time the two teams met, on April, 27, 2018, the Auggies defeated the Gusties 11-3.

The Series vs. St. Scholastica

Monday’s games will mark the 20th and 21st all-time meeting between the Saints and Gusties with Gustavus holding a 14-5 advantage. The last time the two teams met on April, 7, 2017, St. Scholastica came out with a 7-5 win.

The Series vs. Bethany Lutheran

The Gusties and Vikings have met four times with Gustavus currently holding a 4-0 advantage. The two teams last met on May 3, 2006 with the Gusties winning 17-4.

Scouting the Auggies

Augsburg is most recently coming off a series split with Crown on Thursday. Through 38 games the Auggies are hitting .273 while their pitching staff is holding opponents to the same percentage. Sam Anderson has been the teams leader at the plate and on the mound. Anderson is batting .464 this season and slugging .643 while Anesia King has also hit well, batting .407 with a slugging percentage of .648. On them ound Anderson has started 21 games and appeared in 26, compiling a 10-13 record with a 2.73 ERA in 143.1 innings pitched.

Scouting the Saints

St. Scholastica is most recently coming off a series sweep over North Central on Thursday. Through 34 games the Saints are hitting .299 as a team while holding opponents to an average of .272. CSS is led by Maggie Schley who has posted an average of .411 this year with 35 RBI. Josie Fourre has also been a steady force in the middle of the Saints lineup, hitting .390 with seven home runs and a slugging percentage of .847. Schley and Olivia Howe do nearly all of the work on the mound for St. Scholastica. Schley is 11-8 with a 2.89 ERA in 111.1 innings pitched while Howe is 10-4 with a 3.22 ERA in 95.2 innings.

Scouting the Vikings

Bethany Lutheran is most recently coming off a series sweep of UW-Superior on Wednesday. Through 33 games the Vikigs are batting .319 as a team and holding opponents to an average of .275. Haylee Sobrero has been the teams leader at the plate this season batting .423 with a team-high 24 runs scored and team-best 32 RBI. Sarah Presler and Zoe Kinakin are teams next two hitters with averages of .395 and .390, respectively. Bria Majeski and Shelby Bloemendaal have combined to throw 204.2 of the team 210.2 innings this season. Majeski is 14-6 with a 2.84 ERA in 126.2 innings of work while Bloemendaal is 9-3 with a 5.19 ERA in 78.0 innings of work

Scouting the Gusties

Gustavus is most recently coming off a series split last Saturday with Bethel. Through 34 games the Gusties are hitting .259 while opponents are batting .285 against the Gustie staff. Ashley Neuenfeldt is the teams leading hitter, batting .351 with 25 runs scored and 20 RBI. Aly Freeman has also been solid, hitting .320 including six home runs and 11 doubles for a slugging percentage of .602. Freeman and Neuenfeldt have also been the teams two main pitchers, with Neuenfeldt going 7-10 with a 2.97 ERA in 115.1 innings of work while Freeman is 7-9 with a 3.11 ERA in 94.2 innings.
