SAINT PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus men’s basketball team will put its five-game win streak at Gus Young Court on the line when No. 5 St. Thomas comes to town Monday for a 7 p.m. contest. The Gusties enter the contest at 10-11 overall and 7-9 in MIAC play while the Tommies are 19-1 overall and 15-0 in the league.
The Series
Tonight’s contest marks the 194th all-time contest between the two teams with the Tommies leading the series 118-75. The two teams met earlier this season on Jan. 2 with the Tommies winning 97-53.
Scouting the Gusties
The Gusties enter the contest winners of five straight contests at home, most recently defeating Carleton on Saturday 67-61. Gustavus has been solid offensively on the season shooting 46.6 percent from the field which ranks third in the MIAC, while their three-point percentage of 37.2 is fifth. The Black and Gold also dish out 15.3 assists per game which ranks fourth in the league. Logan Rezac has been playing well of late for the Gusties notching 14 points and seven rebounds in the teams win over Hamline on Thursday before putting up 15 points and six rebounds on Saturday.
Scouting the Tommies
St. Thomas comes into Monday’s contest on a 19 game win streak, most recently defeating Hamline 108-58 on Saturday. The Tommies have a variety of players that pitch in on the offensive end with the duo of Anders Nelson and Connor Bair leading the way. Nelson averages 15.4 points to go along with 4.5 rebounds and 4.7 assists while Bair tallies 13.9 points, 4.8 rebounds and 1.1 blocks. St. Thomas averages 86.6 points and 17.9 assists per game which both rank first in the MIAC. Defensively they notch 7.5 steals per game and hold opponents to 29.7 percent shooting from beyond the arc which both rank first in the league.
