SAINT PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus men’s soccer team Tuesday was upset by Hamline 1-0 at the Gustie Soccer Field. The loss snaps a seven-match winning streak for the Gusties as they fall to 12-2-1 overall and 7-1-1 in the MIAC.
Hamline scored the lone goal of the game in the 38th minute on a penalty kick. The Gusties were given a yellow card in the box, which set up the game-winner.
Gustavus held possession for a majority of the match, outshooting the Pipers 25-2 with 15 shots on goal.
“You look at the box score and you would think that the team with 23 more shots would get the result, but the reality is we simply didn’t take care of the details today,” Head Coach Tudor Flintham said. “We need to own our failures from today, and the energy and focus that we’ve trained with recently took too long to arrive, and we left our voices and intensity in the locker room for the first half. Our conference is possibly the most unforgiving out there so if you switch off for a minute, let alone a half, you will get punished. When things aren’t going well for you, you need to fall back on doing the basic things correctly, and defensively one versus one we weren’t good or disciplined enough today. The positive here is that we still control our own destiny headed in to the last MIAC game of the year.”
The Gusties host Buena Vista at 3:30 p.m. tomorrow at the Gustie Reserve Field and finish the regular season Saturday at Macalester.
