Saint Benedict Uses Strong Second Half to Defeat Women’s Soccer

The Gustavus women’s soccer team dropped a tough contest to the College of Saint Benedict on Saturday afternoon by a score of 3-2.

ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – The Gustavus women’s soccer team dropped a tough contest to the College of Saint Benedict on Saturday afternoon by a score of 3-2. The loss drops the Gusties to 5-8-1 overall with a 2-5-1 record in MIAC play while the Bennies move to 5-6-1 overall with a 4-3-1 conference record.

For the fourth consecutive contest the Gusties scored the first goal of the game when in the second minute Katie Ashpole (So., Chaska, Minn.) received a pass from Rachel Rehnelt (Fy., Albert Lea, Minn.) and chipped one from the right side of the box over the goalkeepers outstretched arms for the early 1-0 lead. The Gusties held their 1-0 lead all the way until after halftime before Megan Thompson of Saint Benedict scored a goal in the 50th minute and then scored again in the 52nd minute to give the 2-1 lead to the Bennies. The Gusties answered back in the 59th minute though when Chase Miller (Sr., Brooklyn Park, Minn.) took a shot from outside the box that found the back of the net to make the score 2-2. Thompson wasn’t done though for the Bennies as she recorded a hat trick when she scored again in the 65th minute to give Saint Benedict the game-winning goal. Abby Goodno (Fy., Little Canada, Minn.) got the start in net for the Gusties and recorded four saves while allowing three goals.

The Gusties will be back in action on Wednesday when they head to UW-Eau Claire for a 4 p.m. contest
