ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Gustavus women’s soccer team traveled to St. Thomas on Saturday afternoon and dropped a 2-1 overtime contest to the Tommies. With the loss the Gusties will move to 4-3-1 on the season and 1-1-1 in the MIAC while the Tommies move to 6-1 with a 2-0 record in conference.

The Gusties got the early advantage in the contest when Abby Mullenbach (Jr., Lakeville, Minn.) took the ball down the right side of the field and punched a shot in to give the Gusties a 1-0 lead. The Gusties held onto that lead going into halftime and it wasn’t until 14 minutes into the second half that the Tommies scored to even the game at one apiece. The rest of regulation went scoreless to send the game to overtime, but less than a minute into the extra period and the Tommies scored the game winner to take home the victory. Abby Goodno (Fy., Little Canada, Minn.) started the game in net once again for the Gusties and made five saves in the contest, while allowing the two goals.

On the match, head coach Laura Burnett-Kurie, “We started out the game incredibly well. We looked crisp and engaged and our goal was very well deserved. The second half was exciting and we turned it on near the end earning several corner kicks. Obviously that wasn’t the result we wanted but we had some shining moments.”

The Gusties next match will be on Wednesday, when they will play host to St. Olaf for a 4 p.m. contest.
