PLEASANT HILL, Iowa – The Gustavus baseball team turned in a Saturday split with a 7-5 victory and 5-4 loss against Luther College, moving its overall record to 5-4 on the season.
Gustavus 7, Luther 5 (Game One)
In game one, Adam Stockwell (Jr., Apple Valley, Minn.) earned the start on the mound and had a solid outing of three runs allowed off five hits in six innings pitched.
The Gusties gained a 4-0 lead with RBI hits from Cole Pengilly (Fy., Le Sueur, Minn.), Ethan Mocchi (Fy., Champlin, Minn.) and Brice Panning (So., Hamburg, Minn.). Just as the Norse trimmed the Gustavus lead to 4-3, Brock Peterson (Sr., Cannon Falls, Minn.) answered with his first career homer, a shot off the light pole in right center to put the Black and Gold up 5-3.
After Luther scraped together a couple runs, a wild pitch and Nathan Lindberg (Fy., Bloomington, Minn.) double then extended the Gustie lead to 7-5.
John Lundquist (Sr., Rochester, Minn.) earned the win, pitching one inning. Sam Archer (Jr., Princeton, Minn.) closed out the Norse in the final inning as the Gusties shut the door on a 6-4-3 double play.
Luther 5, Gustavus 4 (Game Two)
Charlie Hutchinson (Fy., Maple Grove, Minn.) received his second career starting nod in game two. He tossed five innings, surrendering four runs off six hits.
Down 4-1 heading into the seventh inning, four-straight Gustie base-runners, including hits from Pengilly, Panning, and Carter Clemensen (Fy., Cologne, Minn.) tied the game at 4-4. However, the Norse answered with the game-winning hit in the bottom half to seal a 5-4 win and salvage a split.
Tomorrow, Gustavus and Luther is set for another doubleheader. Game one is scheduled for a noon start, weather pending.
