Women’s Swim & Dive Finishes Second At MIAC Championships

The Gustavus women’s swim & dive team finished the MIAC Championships on Saturday with a second place finish, scoring 657 points. St. Thomas won the title with 867 points and St. Olaf took third with 492 points.

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Gustavus women’s swim & dive team finished the MIAC Championships on Saturday with a second place finish, scoring 657 points. St. Thomas won the title with 867 points and St. Olaf took third with 492 points.

“I thought we swam amazing all weekend,” Head Coach Jon Carlson said. “The team atmosphere was unbelievable. They produced great swims and they swam for each other. Its hard to create that type of atmosphere in an individualized sport, but that’s exactly what they did.”

A pair of All-Conference performances highlighted Saturday’s final session. Sophia Steinberg (Fy., Faribault, Minn.) took second on the one-meter diving board with a score of 362.15 and the 400 freestyle relay team of Kennedy Holwerda (Sr., Willmar, Minn.), Alyssa Kohorst (Fy., Sauk Center, Minn.), Maggie Webster (Jr., Apple Valley, Minn.), and Kate Reilly (Sr., Hastings, Minn.) also finished second with an NCAA B qualifying time of 3:29.68.

Sydney Hallmark (Jr., Cedarburg, Wis.) earned a fourth place finish in the 1650 free in 17:47.46, and Hayley Pesik (Jr., Eagan, Minn.) also claimed a fourth place finish in the 200 breaststroke, touching the wall in 2:23.56. Hallmark took fifth in the 200 butterfly in 2:11.04, while Holwerda and Amelia Bjorklund (Fy., Bloomington, Minn.) finished fifth and sixth in the 200 backstroke, respectively, with times of 2:11.03 and 2:11.97.

The NCAA Championships participants will be announced Wednesday, Feb. 28.
