NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Gustavus men’s soccer team opened Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play Wednesday afternoon at Carleton College, taking the Knights into an overtime period and falling 1-0 to move its record to 3-3 overall and 0-1 in MIAC play.
After an even first 90 minutes, Carleton notched the game-winner just under two minutes into the first overtime period off a corner kick opportunity, handing Gustavus its first shutout loss of 2017 in the 1-0 final.
“Disappointing result, but very good performance, especially in the first half,” said Head Coach Mike Middleton. “We dominated the game for large period of time without creating enough clear opportunities.
The Knights held a 11-10 advantage in shot totals, while each squad tallied four corner kicks. Matt Murakami (Sr., Eden Prairie, Minn.) led the Gusties with three shots, while Arthur Parens (Jr., Wayzata, Minn.) and Jarod Petrovic (So., Plainfield, Ill.) each added two. Goalkeeper Matt Bateman (Jr., Savage, Minn.) made three saves while suffering the loss in goal.
“There is no doubt that the game on Sunday affected this result,” Middleton commented. “Now we need to get back on track for this weekend.”
Next up, Gustavus readies for a match with Concordia College Saturday afternoon, hosting the Cobbers at 1 p.m.
