ST. PETER, Minn. – The No. 14-ranked Gustavus volleyball team travels to St. Paul, Minn., this evening, opening Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action at Hamline University.
LAST TIME OUT
Gustavus improved its overall record to 7-1 on the season last weekend, going 3-1 at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Tournament. The Gusties first loss of 2017 came against the No. 12-ranked Millikin University, falling 3-2.
LUETHMERS EARNS ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Defensive specialist Brittany Luethmers (Jr., Prior Lake, Minn.) earned Libero of the Week honors after leading the Gustie defense over the weekend. Averaging 5.4 digs per set, including a season-high 26 digs in the 3-1 victory over UW-Stevens Point, Luethmers totaled 81 digs in four matches. She also passed two Gusties on the career digs leader-board and now sits third all-time with 1,276 career digs.
IN THE POLLS
The Gusties moved up in the most recent Division III National rankings. In the AVCA Coaches Poll, Gustavus moved up from No. 20 to No. 14. Fellow MIAC opponents University of St. Thomas is ranked No. 23, along with Bethel University and Augsburg University receiving votes.
THE SERIES
Wednesday’s contest marks the 65th all-time meeting between Gustavus and Hamline with the Gusties holding a 52-10-2 record over the Pipers. Last season, Gustavus swept Hamline 3-0 in St. Paul.
SCOUTING HAMLINE
Hamline has started off the year with a 3-7 overall record, dropping its last five matches. The Pipers’ wins came against North Central, Carroll, and Crown College. As a team, Hamline is hitting .114, averaging 15.1 digs per set and 1.1 blocks per set. Cass Bittle leads the attack with 92 kills, while Megan Rubbelke has 124 assists and Cassie Doerr has 113 digs.
