ST. MARY’S CITY, Md. – Gustavus men’s soccer fell 1-0 against St. Mary’s College in day one of the Seahawks Classic on the campus of St. Mary’s College of Maryland.

The Gusties fall to a 1-4 overall record on the season. Despite the loss, Head Coach Mike Middleton is pleased with his team’s performance.

“Excellent game today, with lots of to-and-fro,” said Middleton. “We certainly had some good chances. The results are not going our way yet, but we are playing well.  And, with a young group we are learning all the time.”

St. Mary’s scored the lone goal of the game early at the 2:53 mark of the first period. An even match from then on disallowed either team to find the back of the net. Gustavus trailed St. Mary’s in total shots, 14-9.

Anders Severson (So., Woodbury, Minn.) made five saves in goal. Isaac Bloom (Jr., Edina, Minn.), Matt Murakami (Jr. Eden Prairie, Minn.), Arthur Parens (So., Wayzata, Minn.), David Almaer (So., Plymouth, Minn.), and Luke Laurich, Fy., Batavia, Ill.) each posted one shot on goal.

“This is a top tournament, and its great to be part of,” Middleton said. “We have some of the top teams in the nation here, and we play one of the preseason favorites for the NCAA title tomorrow.”

The Gusties continue play in the Seahawk Classic tomorrow at noon against Salisbury State.

“The lads have been receiving some compliments about how they play, which is always nice but we are now wanting to put the performances into the win column. We’ll see what we can do tomorrow,” Middleton commented.
