SAN ANTONIO – The Gustavus Adolphus College women’s tennis team opened its Texas schedule and spring outdoor season with a 9-0 win over Mary Hardin Baylor on Saturday morning at Trinity University. The win bumps the Gusties to 7-3 overall.

“This was a nice way to open the outdoor portion of our schedule,” said Coach Jon Carlson. “Despite a long travel day yesterday, I thought the entire team came out with good energy and focus this morning. Doubles especially looked good – we’re getting more and more comfortable with our targets.”

The Gustie doubles squads were indeed impressive, as all three pairings lost a total of just four games. Michaela Schulz (Jr., Elk River, Minn.)/Lizzy Stanczyk (Sr., Plymouth, Wis.) were 8-2 winners at No. 1, Sid Dirks (Sr., St. Peter, Minn.)/Lilly Hartman (Fy., Cedar Rapids, Iowa) came away with an 8-2 win at No. 2, and Ally Baker (So., Rosemount, Minn.)/Briana Hartmann (Fy., Owatonna, Minn.) put up an 8-0 bagel at No. 3.

Gustavus’s victories were just as convincing in singles, with the Black and Gold dropping just 18 total games in all six matches. Dirks and Katie Aney (So., Rochester, Minn.) had the most convincing wins of the morning, with Dirks earning a 6-0, 6-2 win at the third spot, and Aney falling in her first two games before rattling off 12 straight for the 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 6.

The Gusties are back in action tomorrow with two matches. They’ll take on No. 37 East Texas Baptist at 10 a.m. and follow that with a duel against Texas Lutheran at 2 p.m.
