ST. PETER, Minn. – Fresh off a two week hiatus from competition, the Gustavus Adolphus College women’s tennis team swept a trio of conference opponents on Saturday, taking down Bethel University and Concordia College 9-0 at the Swanson Tennis Center, and defeating Hamline University 9-0 at the Baseline Tennis Center on the University of Minnesota campus. The wins moved the Gusties to 4-2 overall and a perfect 3-0 in the MIAC.
“We had a great day of competition today,” said Coach Jon Carlson. “We played well, but I think we also found a number of things we need to continue working on, especially on the doubles side of things. The team knows that though, and is already excited to get to practice this next week to keep working.”
Gustavus began its day with Bethel, and saw Michaela Schulz (Jr., Elk River, Minn.), Lizzy Stanczyk (Sr., Plymouth, Wis.), Katie Aney (So., Rochester, Minn.), and Cal Carlson (Jr., St. Peter, Minn.) each earn wins in singles and doubles. Carlson had the most convincing singles win, knocking off Sarah Wallace 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 6 spot. Schulz, Stanczyk, and Aney each did their part as well, with Schulz winning 6-1, 6-3 at No. 1, Stanczyk earning a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 2, and Aney coming through with a 6-3, 6-3 victory at No. 5. Ally Baker (So., Rosemount, Minn.) and Briana Hartmann (Fy., Owatonna, Minn.) were the other singles victors, with Baker taking a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 3, and Hartmann squeezing one out in a super-breaker with a 6-4, 1-6, 10-3 victory.
Doubles also featured a Gustie sweep, with Schulz/Stanczyk taking an 8-2 win at No. 1, Sid Dirks (Sr., St. Peter, Minn.)/Aney winning 8-2 at No. 2, and the third doubles team of Carlson/Lilly Hartman (Fy., Cedar Rapids, Iowa) coming through with an 8-1 win.
Later in the day against Concordia, Gustavus had similar success, with Dirks, Aney, Baker, Hartmann, and Hartman each earning both singles and doubles victories. Dirks took a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles and an 8-3 win with Aney at No. 1 doubles. Baker was a 6-1, 6-1 victor at No. 2 singles and picked up a 8-0 win at No. 2 doubles with Hartmann. Hartman put up bagels at No. 5 singles and also earned an 8-0 victory at No. 3 doubles with Carlson. Taylor Shortly (So., Lindstrom, Minn.) was the Gusties’ winning representative at the No. 6 singles spot, earning a 6-1, 6-0 win.
The Gusties earned their final sweep in Minneapolis against Hamline, with Schulz, Stanczyk, Dirks, and Hartmann each winning in both singles and doubles. Hartman paired with Dirks at No. 2 doubles, Baker paired with Hartmann at No. 3 doubles, and Shortly and Sheila Sullivan (Fy., St. Paul, Minn.) rounded out the singles lineup to complete the sweep.
Gustavus competes again next Saturday with home matches against Morningside and University of Minnesota, Duluth, and a tough road contest at Division I Drake.
