The Gustavus football team hosts Augsburg College for its Homecoming game at 1 p.m. Saturday. The Gusties enter with a 3-0 overall record and 1-0 mark in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference after defeating Hamline University 42-35 last week, while the Auggies are 2-1 overall and 1-0 in the MIAC after beating Carleton College 54-28 last week.

Scouting the Gusties
The Gustavus football team held off a late comeback last Saturday night at Hamline University, coming away with an exciting 42-35 victory over the Pipers to improve to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
The Gusties scored touchdowns on their first four drives of the game and looked every bit in control with a 28-7 lead midway through the second quarter. But the Pipers chipped away at the lead with a pair of unanswered touchdowns to end the first half and went into the break trailing the Gusties by seven.
Gustavus controlled the third quarter with a pair of touchdowns to take a comfortable 42-21 advantage, but once again, the Pipers responded with a pair of touchdowns late in the fourth quarter to make it a one-possession game. Facing third down and nine from the Hamline 48 and 2:02 left in the game, Mitch Hendricks (Sr., Bemidji, Minn.) heaved a high pass down the right sideline to Matt Boyce (Sr., Excelsior, Minn.) and Boyce came down with the jump ball at the 16-yard line for a first down that proved to be the final straw. The Gusties then ran out the clock and found a way to win against a conference opponent on the road.
The Gustavus offense had another big day, totaling 520 yards. Hendricks completed 31-of-44 passes for 307 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. He also added a rushing touchdown.
Gabe Boyce (Sr., Excelsior, Minn.) was the top target with nine receptions for 70 yards. Matt Boyce compiled a team-high 118 yards on six catches and a touchdown. The rushing game was led by DaiVon Poole (So., San Angelo, Texas) who had 15 carries for 107 yards and three touchdowns – a career best for yards and touchdowns in a game.
Defensively, Mason Kaliszewski (Jr. Maple Grove, Minn.) and Anders Raarup (So., Eagan, Minn.) led the way with seven stops apiece. Kaliszewski also added 2.5 tackles for a loss of 13 yards and a half sack.

Scouting the Auggies
The Augsburg football team improved to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in the MIAC after a convincing 54-28 victory over Carleton College last Saturday in Minneapolis, Minn. Ayrton Scott (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn.) and Tyrell Martin (Sr., West St. Paul, Minn.) each rushed for 154 yards and each scored two touchdowns.
Augsburg trailed 21-20 at halftime, but outscored Carleton 34-7 in the second half, scoring on five of its seven second-half drives to reach the 54-point mark for the second straight week. As a team, Augsburg outgained Carleton by a 534-375 margin. Augsburg had 347 rushing yards and 187 passing yards, while Carleton had 204 passing yards and 171 rushing yards.
Scott rushed for 154 yards on 18 carries and scored two rushing touchdowns, while completing 15-of-21 passes for 187 yards and three touchdowns against one interception. He rushed for a 20-yard touchdown in the first quarter and a one-yard touchdown early in the fourth quarter. Scott’s three touchdown passes were to Derek Ruff (Sr., Shoreview, Minn.) in the second quarter, Scott Bossard (Sr., North Branch, Minn.) in the third quarter and Jorden Gannon (So., Roseville, Minn.) in the fourth quarter. The Auggies leading receiver on the season, Joey Sonnenfeld (Sr., Maple Grove, Minn.), caught nine passes for 109 yards.
Martin rushed for 100-plus yards for the second time in his three starts this season, rushing for an 11-yard score in the first quarter and a 64-yard score in the third quarter. Tiras Bolton (So., Omaha, Neb.) rushed for 41 yards on six carries, including a 20-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter.
Defensively, Raymond Carter (So., Jordan, Minn.) led the way for the Auggies with 10 tackles, while Matt Bowlin (Jr., Chanhassen, Minn.) had eight tackles. Tyler Sis (Sr., Brooklyn Park, Minn.) and Christopher Hanson (Sr., New Prague, Minn.) each had quarterback sacks. Sis recorded seven tackles, including three tackles for-loss.
